Driving into Medellín from the airport is a jaw-droppingly beautiful experience as the city emerges, nestled in the Aburrá Valley and guarded by the majestic Andes Mountains. The location will enchant you. And you haven’t even met its people yet! The cheerful streets teem with pedestrians out for an afternoon stroll, artisans selling stunning handmade creations, and vendors offering mini plastic cups of tinto, 100% authentic Colombian coffee.
Like many places, Medellín has a past. But out of that past has sprung what is now one of Latin America’s safest large cities. Momenta invites you to join our adventure in Colombia and witness one of South America’s not-so-hidden gems in action.
The centerpiece of the workshop is the annual Feria de Las Flores (Festival of the Flowers.) This huge, region-wide social event celebrates the independence of Antioquia in the most colorful and festive way possible. A profusion of events surround the festivities. These include parades, concerts and exhibitions; all framed by some of the most beautiful fresh flower arrangements you can imagine.
Following this event, our group of passionate photographers will head into the lush agricultural region of Northern Urabá Antioquia along the Atlantic coastline. For our week in the North, we will be the guests of our local nonprofit organization collaborators who are helping the area grow and thrive after decades of conflict.
This workshop will be a unique blend of both the festive and the serious. Truly, its a new jewel in the Momenta line which affords us this this mix of opportunity. We travel to Colombia to learn of the culture, meet its residents, and change lives with the craft of documentary photography.
In Medellín and our secondary location on the Atlantic coast, we connect photographers with local nonprofit organizations and are there every step of the way as you work toward creating a compelling visual or multimedia narrative. We do this through daily, 1-on-1, hour-long editing sessions with an instructor. The workshop ends with a group slideshow and celebration of the work we create together.
Likewise, one of the best features of a Momenta Project workshop is the ability to use a camera from our sponsor, Leica Camera. You will have the opportunity to use a Leica M Camera and lens kit during your workshop or you can take a Leica point-n-shoot with you on your daily assignment work instead. If you have a Leica already, we may have some fun gear you’ve never tried before to use. It’s a great chance to experience documentary photography in a new way on this very special workshop.
Based on our experiences during the last Project Colombia, we are certain our clients will find this welcoming country offers the best of all worlds in terms of documentary travel photography and collaboration with NGOs. We know you will experience excitement, enjoyment, and some of the best photography in our line of workshops!
