Five years ago, Patrick West and Momenta created the West Award, a full workshop scholarship for university students who display the qualities which Patrick West has instilled in the rest of us through his moving images and philanthropic deeds.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Marianne Barthelemy to our Project New Orleans 2018 workshop as the co-recipient of the West Award. Marianne is a graduate student at S.I. Newhouse, and is exploring black homeschool initiatives in the state of New York as well as the effects of incarceration in her native France.

Her passion for non-profits and her unique portfolio made her a clear choice for the West Award. Her body of work offered a special take on approaching documentary work, and combined with her passion for social justice, suggests she will become a strong voice in the coming years.

At Momenta, we strive to teach everyone who attends our workshops how to document cover stories with the utmost professionalism while promoting the essential elements for the audience to witness. As Marianne told us after winning the award, “I love telling people’s stories, and I’m always looking for different ways to do so, all in hope of promoting empathy, agency, and change. And that’s what Momenta is all about!”

We’re looking forward to seeing Marianne become the inspirational photographer we know she will be. Look at her work and follow her on her website www.mariannebarthelemy.com or on Instagram @marianne.bart

Interested in applying for the West Award? We are still accepting applications for Project Charleston 2018 and Project Portland 2018. Click here to apply by May 1st and June 1st respectively.
