Project NOLA 2023
A Nonprofit Storytelling Workshop
A Nonprofit Storytelling Workshop
This workshop is our longest-running and most popular program because New Orleans is a city unlike any other. The last few years has changed the city in ways not seen since Hurricane Katrina. The effects of COVID-19 have taken away many nonprofit safety nets and left their clients in serious need. As we work side-by-side to help the local nonprofits in their recovery, this workshop will be more powerful and more necessary than any we have ever seen before.
Momenta is deeply rooted in New Orleans.
For every year since our founding, Momenta has been working with the incredibly dedicated nonprofit teams in the Crescent City. The nonprofits benefit from your brilliant photos by using them to tell their story to the world and you will learn real-world skills to documenting humanitarian issues.
Your work can change someone’s life.
On this inspirational workshop, you will be paired with a local nonprofit to create a powerful photo essay about their staff and all their efforts to fulfill their mission. You’ll also have a full day of educational lectures, hands-on instruction to help improve your technical skills, as well as daily one-on-one editing sessions. We will end our week together with a huge public slideshow party celebrating the amazing nonprofits and your projects!

At Momenta, we believe in the power of photography as a force of change, and the nonprofits we work with value that supportive change. After facing down hurricanes, the Gulf Oil Spill, historically fast gentrification in the past decade, and now the pandemic, the people and nonprofits in the city still work tirelessly to make their city as prosperous as ever.
Join Momenta on this unique workshop to participate with the devoted volunteers of the Crescent City. Volunteer your time and skills to document their tremendous hard work and resilience. You will be a part of the effort to help each and every nonprofit on its path to a successful future. You, in turn, will walk away with a successful photo package to use in your portfolio to market yourself to other nonprofit clients and collaborators.
If you’ve never been on a workshop with us before, we recommend you visit the blog series, 5 Questions With…, to read interviews with our alumni here. You will come to learn about the #MomentaFamily and the amazing experiences of those who came before you.
We will focus our work on local NGOs and nonprofits of varying specialization and scale. From musical preservation organizations to community outreach to animal rescue, workshop attendees will be tasked with creating compelling visual or multimedia narrative packages in collaboration with their assigned nonprofit. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Our faculty have always practiced the highest health and safety protocols during our small group programs. We take great care with our programs and next year will be no exception. Please review any CDC Guidelines for travel and consult your doctor if you are seeking medical advice for your journeys.
Orientation Day. This is a jam-packed lecture and learning day. We will begin your workshop at 10 a.m. and conclude at 7 p.m. Please have your computer and your cameras with you. There will be a break for a catered group lunch. This lunch is the only sponsored meal of the workshop so please plan accordingly.
Let’s celebrate! Friday’s editing sessions happen all morning and afternoon as everyone is finalizing their project. You can still use this day to document your nonprofit or spend more time editing your work. You and your editor will choose a selection of images for the final slideshow party that night that is open to all nonprofits, members of the public, Momenta alumni, and our workshop. This is a very special slideshow experience and a wonderful way to celebrate all your hard work of the workshop as a group.
Documenting Your Nonprofits. Each day you’ll work with your individual nonprofit assignments to develop a shooting schedule. When you get a break, you’ll return to headquarters for your one-on-one editing sessions with a coach. Each person can sign up for a 1-hour editing session with a coach per day. Sign-ups happen the day before and this process will be covered extensively during orientation. On day 2 & 3, group meetings will happen at 7:30-8:30 p.m. every night and are usually followed up by a trip to a local pub for more reviews and revelry.
Les bon temps rouler! On this optional day of street and event photography, traverse the historic French Quarter with your fellow workshop attendees and staff at The French Quarter Festival, the biggest free music festival in the South. The FQF celebrates the musicians native to NOLA and is an explosion of music, dancing, food, street performers, and fun. This extra day is a wonderful way to conclude your week in New Orleans and kick back with your fellow attendees for a day of revelry!
